The Geographic Names Information System is a computer-based information system that provides information for named entities in the United States. To meet major national needs, in 1978 the United States Geological Survey agreed to develop and maintain a master computer-based catalog of domestic geographic names. This program provides direct support to the United States Geological Survey mapping mission, the USGS being responsible for providing staff support for the domestic names activities. A separate file is maintained for each state, territory, and outlying area. The National Geographic Names Database is the largest database in the Geographic Names Identification System. Databases in the GNIS include:
The National Geographic Names Database
The National Topographic Map Names Database
The Reference Database
The Board on Geographic Names Database
The goal of the United States Board on Geographic Names is to create and develop an information depository that could facilitate the standardization of geographic names in the United States and be able to meet a variety of special needs.
This collection is primarily concerned with the Phase II work done for Utah State.
The material in series I was gathered from field-work done in Utah for Phase II of the United States Geographic Names Identification System. Materials include: Printouts from the completed Phase I project to be used for the Phase II project, instructions regarding Phase II, worksheets on individual place names that include the co-ordinates, names, and variants. Series I includes bound computer printouts and unbound handwritten field notes on worksheets.
Series II is a collection of established and registered geographic place names for Utah.
