Background

Background Note

Formed in 1885, the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation was organized as a professional association for recreational, health and physical educators. The organization was divided into different districts. Utah was part of the Southwest district, which also included Arizona, Nevada and California. The Utah Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation was an independent entity operating within the A.A.H.P.E.R.
Currently, the A.A.H.P.E.R. is known as the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, with six districts under its direction. The Utah Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance continues to fall into the Southwest District category.
