Background Note

Jessie May Perry was born 17 March 1897 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William T. and Mary Ellen Midgley Perry. After she received her B.S. from the University of Utah and her M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College in New York City, Perry taught singing for 41 years as an Associate Professor Emeritus of the music department of the University of Utah.
Perry was a distinguished educator. The University of Utah named her "Woman of the Year" in 1959, and in 1964 she was a "Faculty Woman of Distinction." She was listed in Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in American Education. Perry was a member of the Standard School Broadcast Advisory. She was President and founder of Utah Music Teacher's Association before her death 8 May 1983.

Scope and Content

The collection includes teaching materials from Jessie May Perry, a music professor at the University of Utah.
The collection includes some interesting materials to researchers. Perry was evidently interested in the contemporaneous events in Central and South America, and the collection includes her notes and materials. Perry also saved some interesting publications, including Modern Music: A Quarterly Review Published by The League of Composers dated November-December 1941, which includes articles about contemporary music. Topics cover music in Latin America, publishing during wartime, and composers of the Soviet Union.
