The Preservation section of the Utah State Historical Society sponsored a photo contest for the purpose of documenting old barns in Utah. The rustic character and their architecture represented created an enticing subject for this contest. Rural farm life was a large part of early Utah and this contest presented an opportunity to document a segment of Utah life before all of the barns disappeared.
The response to the contest was overwhelming. There were over 350 entries from all over the state. Twelve "winning" photographs were selected as well as eight "honorable mentions." The winners were displayed in a traveling exhibit that was created as a special feature of this contest. The photographs were displayed at various locations throughout the state in 1998.
