Background Note

The Preservation section of the Utah State Historical Society sponsored a photo contest documenting old schools. The nineteenth century school buildings that were built are no longer being used as schools. Many have been demolished to make way for "progress." Thought has not gone into these old structures as to current modern-day uses. Deficiencies in safety and technology are often cited as reasons why particular buildings are obsolete. Seismic upgrades, new fire sprinkler systems, air conditioning and wiring for computers are very doable.

Scope and Content

This collection attempts to bring back fond memories of these early school years. Over 130 photographs were submitted for this contest. Twelve were selected as winners and five of these twelve were given special recognition as Merit Award winners.
