The Utah Division of Arts & Museums will award two $10,000 Visual Arts Fellowships to acknowledge and encourage the careers of professional artists who demonstrate exceptional talent and dedication. Applications opened Jan. 1, 2018 and are due Feb. 1, 2018.
Artists will be chosen by juror Janet Dees, the Steven and Lisa Munster Tananbaum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Mary & Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University. Prior to her appointment at the Block in September 2015, she was curator at SITE Santa Fe, where she had held various curatorial positions since 2008.
Dees was a part of the curatorial team for the inaugural SITElines: New Perspectives on Art of the Americas biennial, and has curated exhibitions and produced new commissions with a wide variety of artists. Her writing has been featured in publications for SITE Santa Fe, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and Radius Books, among others.
Dees earned a B.A. from Fordham University in Art History & African-American Studies, and an M.A. in Art History from the University of Delaware. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in art history at the University of Delaware.
Past Fellows have used the honor as a way to fund new projects and pursue additional grant opportunities, seek residencies, or propose more ambitious exhibitions.
“The Fellowship has had a direct impact on subsequent accomplishments,” Alice Leora Briggs said. “This includes my ability to successfully compete for residencies, exhibitions, additional grants and fellowships, as well as teaching positions. The juror for my Fellowship purchased my work and contacted me to apply for a residency program he was directing.”
Utah Arts & Museums is the oldest publicly funded state arts agency in the nation, with a tradition of recognition and support for individual artist. This tradition continues each year through the Visual Arts Fellowship Program. For application and full guidelines visit visualarts.utah.gov.
