Certified Utah Museum Designation

The 2008 State Legislature enacted a bill that requires Utah Arts & Museums to establish a Certified Utah Museum program.¬†Utah museums complete and submit the form below every two years indicating that they comply with basic requirements.¬†Museums must have current Utah Certified Museum status to be eligible for UA&M’s Museum grants. Certified Utah Museums are also eligible for a reduced rate of $65 on their annual Charitable Soliciations Permit.

Museum Performance Goals

The State Performance Goals for Utah Museums are designed to help Utah’s small and mid-sized museums guide improvement in eight areas of museum operations through self study. The goals are modeled on the Museum Assessment Program (MAP) administered by the American Alliance of Mueums and Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (StEPS) administered by the American Association for State and Local History. The State Performance Goals should be good preparation and provide confidence in self-assessment so that museums can ultimately seek these or other national certifications while being accessible to the state’s smallest museums. The museum performance goals encourage museums to engage in self-study and improvement in eight areas of museum operations:

  • Scope/Purpose/Structure
  • Staff/Volunteers
  • Finance
  • Facilities
  • Collections/Conservation
  • Exhibitions
  • Education
  • Public Relations
