UPLIFT Professional Excellence Grant

Grant Description

The Utah State Library (USL) offers the UPLIFT Professional Excellence Grant to persons employed in Utah libraries for advancing the knowledge, skills, and abilities of individual library employees to better serve their patrons. The Utah State Library funds these grants. Recipients are required to acknowledge the Utah State Library when undertaking and promoting grant supported activities.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a resident of Utah for at least one year.
  • Applicant must be employed by, or be a board member of, a publicly funded school or public library, or be a Utah-based member of the Utah Academic Library Consortium.
  • Only one grant per individual funded every two state fiscal years (July 1- June 30).
  • An MLIS applicant must first have completed at least six credit hours in a library science program to be eligible for a tuition support grant.
  • Individuals working in personal, church, or private libraries and full-time students working on general undergraduate degrees are not eligible for these grants.

Project Eligibility (Priority given in the following order)

  • Graduate library science courses.
  • Appropriate undergraduate courses in library science.
  • Appropriate non-credit courses in library science.
  • Workshops, in-depth training opportunities in library service, or library-related conferences having direct impact upon work or board responsibilities.
  • Targeted training that is customized to the audience.

Funds Available

Applicants may request funds to reimburse registration fees and reasonable travel to a professional development opportunity. Applicants registering for credit courses in a graduate or undergraduate library science degree program may request funds for tuition support only. In this circumstance, a maximum grant pays tuition up to $1,000 per individual, based upon available funding. The Utah State Library will reimburse grant recipients enrolled in credit classes after USL receives a copy of an unofficial transcript and evaluation.

Evaluation

Grant recipients agree to evaluate training opportunities and credit courses using the evaluation and claim form provided by the Utah State Library.

Procedures

  • Applications must be submitted online only. See contact information below.
  • Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on whichever deadline is most appropriate. This schedule may vary in future years depending upon demand and funding.
  • Utah State Library staff reviews the application and gives recommendations to the Director. USL notifies applicants of the decision within thirty days of the review dates (by March 15, July 15, or November 15) and sends out a contract for signatures.
  • The grant recipient returns the signed contract to the State Library.
  • The grant recipient submits financial receipts (for credit courses, a grade report showing successful completion of the course with a grade of C or better), and an evaluation and claim form to the Utah State Library within 30 days of the completion of the event.

ARSL Grant

2017 ARSL Grant Information

Application Deadline: May 15, 2017, 11:30 PM

The Utah State Library is offering a grant to pay for attendance to the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) Conference, September 7-9, 2017 in St. George, UT.  It may also include the preconference on September 6, 2017.

This grant covers conference registration, a one year membership to ARSL, and travel expenses excepting car rental, up to $1,000 total.

Applicant Eligibility

Applicant must be a library director, library staff, or trustee in a small or rural public library or a tribal library in Utah.

Project Eligibility

This grant round is limited to attendance at the Association of Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL) to be held in in St. George, UT on September 7-9, 2017, preconference September 6.

Funds Available

USL pays for registration, ARSL membership, lodging, meals, and transportation expenses excluding car rental. The maximum award is up to $1,000 per individual. Applicant must complete the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

Acknowledgement

The USL and the Library Services Technology Act (LSTA) fund these grants. Recipients are required to acknowledge USL and LSTA when undertaking and promoting grant supported activities.

Evaluation

Grant recipients agree to evaluate this experience using the Claim Form provided by USL.

  1. Apply online
  2. Applications are due by 11:30 pm on May 15, 2017.
  3. Utah State Library Division staff reviews the applications and gives recommendations to the Division Director. Decisions are made based upon the merits of the application. The Division notifies applicants of the decision within 15 days of the review date and sends out a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for signatures.
  4. The grant recipient returns the signed MOA, and all attachments, to Julie Anderson of the State Library, 801-715-6797, juanderson@utah.gov.
  5. The grant recipient submits financial receipts and the Claim Form and Final Report Form document to the Utah State Library Division by October 1, 2017.
  6. Attendees will be required to share what they learned with the larger Utah library community within one year:
    1. Present information you learned in an online training session sponsored by the State Library (Jessica Whetman will help with this)
    2. Submit a short review for use on the State Library’s social media pages
    3. Present at ULA or another Utah library conference
    4. Provide training at your library that others from neighboring libraries may attend
    5. Other

Acknowledging the Utah State Library

How to publicly acknowledge your grant award and give proper credit

A requirement of the UPLIFT Professional Development and the Organization Resource Grants is that you acknowledge the Utah State Library as the source of the funds.

  • PUBLIC EVENTS: At programs or public gatherings related to your award, acknowledge the Utah State Library verbally. Display the USL logo on signage at events.
  • PRESS EVENTS: At press conferences acknowledge the Utah State Library orally. Acknowledge USL on press kits and in press releases.
  • PRINTED MATERIALS: Sample acknowledgements follow. Also use the USL logo whenever possible.
    • “This project is made possible by a grant from the Utah State Library.”
    • For posters, use a size for which the words “Utah State Library” is legible from a distance.
  • WEB SITES: Acknowledge the Utah State Library on your Web site.

  • Use the logo of the Utah State Library whenever possible.
  • Do NOT change USL logo colors or place the logo on a colored background. Utah Department of Heritage and Arts policy states that the logo, with its original colors, must be placed on a white background.
  • Do NOT change the USL logo dimensions. This violates the logo policy of the Department of Heritage and Arts. You can resize the image to fit your needs. If you resize the logo, you must retain the dimensions. If you do not have an image editor try one of the following free online image editors:

UPLIFT Organization Resource Grant

Grant Description

The Utah State Library (USL) offers the UPLIFT Organization Resource Grant to formal library organizations for specialized training. It allows them to develop, implement, and evaluate training efforts that upgrade the skills of library staff, trustees, and library supporters by addressing local needs. The Utah State Library funds these grants. Recipients are required to acknowledge the Utah State Library when undertaking and promoting grant supported activities.

Applicant Eligibility

  • A formal library organization must be eligible for state/federal funding.
  • A formal library organization applying for a grant must submit evidence of fiscal capacity to administer grant funds.
  • A formal library organization include ULA, UELMA, and ULMS.

Project Eligibility

  • The emphasis for the training should be on meeting the needs of the end user: the customers.
  • Library board members, volunteers, advocates, and other supporters may be included in the training as appropriate.

Funds Available

Library organizations may receive grants up to $3,000. Allowable costs include:

  • Trainer fees.
  • Room rental in non-library or agency facility if required.
  • Duplication/purchase of training materials.

The Utah State Library will reimburse after USL receives financial receipts and project evaluations. The grant does not cover indirect costs of the training, nor meals.

Evaluation

Grant recipients agree to evaluate programs using the Claim Form & Final Report (one document) and their own evaluation forms, summarizing the results. A sample evaluation form is available for your use and consideration. Please return the Claim Form & Final Report and a summary of the evaluations to the Utah State Library within 30 days after the event.

UPLIFT Grants

UPLIFT Continuing Education Grants

Through the Utah Public Library Institute for Training (UPLIFT), the Utah State Library offers a variety of training opportunities to individuals, libraries, and library organizations. Training includes basic training for non-MLS library staff, advanced training for the full library community, and training for library trustees, through special institutes, mini-workshops, teleconferences, grants to individuals and grants to library organizations. The future of these continuing education grants depends on federal funding, demand, and assessed impact.

The Utah State Library funds these grants. Recipients are required to acknowledge the Utah State Library when undertaking and promoting grant supported activities.
