House Bill 180 would officially designate the collection as the State of Utah Alice Merrill Horne Art Collection. Currently, the name is the Utah State Alice Art Collection. The change would also apply to the state-owned Alice Gallery.
The bill was approved unanimously by both the House and Senate. It was sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert on Monday, Feb. 12, for his signature.
Sponsoring Rep. Patrice Arent, D-Millcreek, said during a House committee hearing earlier in the session that the change will properly honor Horne, the state’s second female legislator who sponsored the bill in 1899 that created the nation’s first state-funded arts agency.
“It just doesn’t make sense to use only a first name. You want to honor her by using her full name,” Arent said. “As a pioneering woman, as a suffragette, she would want to be recognized by her full name.”
