Established in 1993, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its core programs–Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Social Innovation Fund–and the national volunteer efforts through serve.gov. The mission of CNCS is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. As the nation’s largest grantmaker for service and volunteering, CNCS plays a critical role in strengthening America’s nonprofit sector and addressing our nation’s challenges through service. Visit nationalservice.gov to learn more about this agency and its programs.
AmeriCorps, often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, is a network of local, state, and national service programs. Every year more than 80,000 Americans engage in intensive service to meet community needs in the areas of education, healthy futures, environmental stewardship, disaster services, economic opportunity and veterans and military families. Nationwide, AmeriCorps members serve with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and community organizations.
In partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service, UServeUtah brings National Service programs to Utah. More than three-quarters of AmeriCorps grant funding goes to Governor-appointed state service commissions, such as UServeUtah, which in turn awards and monitor grants to hundreds of nonprofit groups and agencies. AmeriCorps programs operate in almost every region of the state, bringing exciting and innovative programming to both rural and urban Utah. Members serve in full or part-time positions over a 10-12 month period. Upon completion of their service, members receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Members also have access to other benefits such as health insurance, child care, training, and student loan forbearance during their service. Some members also receive a modest annual living allowance depending on the terms of their program.
In the event of a disaster, UServeUtah acts as the liaison with the Corporation for National and Community Service to call upon national service resources, including AmeriCorps members, for on-ground support.
